George took it philosophically. "Pubs have closed after I have played", he said, "but none to avoid me appearing". The frequent demise of pubs and publicans should make us appreciate the continuity we've experienced because of Sue Robson's efforts at the Red Lion. Our session on November 1st will be our 22nd month. Hope you will make it.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear her on a rare visit to the south performing in the small, but perfectly formed North Wall Arts Centre, South Parade, Summertown where Sandi appears as part of the JAZZ ELITE series of concerts.

It's about 200 yards down the southbound lane alongside the Red Lion and its car park, on the left hand side. They expect 8 performers (of which we are the ambassadors for jazz) with refreshments and beer tent.
All jazz musicians welcome. We'll start playing at 2:30 and be off the stand by 4pm
If you can't make that one, come to the Red Lion on the evening of July 5th.

Hi everyone – a quick note for your diary!
Sunday 27th July at 8pm we have our next (Sunday) Jazz Jam at the Jack Russell public house.
The first Sunday jam, last month, showcased some excellent music with a rhythm section of double bass, piano and drums (thanks to Kenny Hung for stepping in to dep for Martin Pickett), various saxes, trumpet, vibraphone, and vocals. A nice bonus with the new Sunday slot is good public attendance – a mix of appreciative locals and supportive friends. Thanks as always to Linda & Nigel for letting us take over their pub to convene the jam.
I’d be grateful if all you players could pass the word on to a guest – either another player (who doesn’t already come along) or a potential audience member, that way we can grow our numbers nice and organically without the need for me to print out bits of paper and add to my already embarrassingly large carbon foot-print. It would also be splendid if all you teachers could encourage students to come along.
Looking forward to seeing you all again on the 27th.
Cheers
Paul

There are usually traps. But not this time, even for the wary.
You probably know that traps are a jazzman’s term for a drum set. It’s probably a contraction of “contraption”, or possibly of “trappings”. Anyway at time of writing we have no drummer. Only once in three years of this peripatetic jam have we failed to provide percussion, so all hope is not lost.
Searches are in progress. No stone will be left unturned. (This is simply a saying, it is not an indication that we think drummers share habitat with insects and gastropods).
Meanwhile please remember to come on July 6th for an 8pm start.
As usual, please post titles you want to play. It helps get us to assemble the right changes in advance, and enables a prompt start.

Reading Jazz Jam

News about the Reading Jam on Wednesday 11th June on www.jazzjam.wordpress.com/ Also check www.myspace.com/syncopait where I believe Paul Jefferies has fixed the revised date for the jack Russell Jam.

But some of the crowd were there for the music, and we hope they were encouraged to return for the next jam on Sunday 1st June at 8pm.
We have lined up a full rhythm section for next session whose sole aim is to support soloists on any jazz tune they can confidently lead on. It helps everyone if you post you probable choice of tunes here in advance, although you can change your mind later, we are flexible. (Tip: I suspect we shall be asked to play Sidewinder every week until we get it right).
Come along whether you want to play or not, there is an interesting range of local beers available.
PS Post some sort of response please, it gets very lonely out here in the aether.

There’s snow business like show business

Despite three inches of snow in the morning of 6th April, we had a full turnout for the jam, and a generous audience.
Our invited bass player must have been deterred by frightening accounts of the weather north of Reading, but we were lucky to have two bass players turn up on spec, Paul Jefferies and Julian Moss, to whom we are especially grateful.
None of the horns found it necessary to use their real books, despite the introduction of a couple of new tunes (Sidewinder and Four) to our familiar playlist.
Next time we plan to include Sweet Sue (in G major) in honour of our hostess, so come prepared on Sunday May 4th for an 8pm start. Check http://www.redlion.biz/ for directions to the pub.
Post here on the blog the titles you would like to play next time. Musicians and supporters seemed to enjoy it, and some even said so, which is rewarding. The current plan is to meet on the first Sunday of each month, ready to start at 8 pm. We finish at 10.
This blog should make it easier for you to check on forthcoming Red Lion Jazz Jams. You might even want to post some titles you want to play next time.
If you are reluctant to lead, you might still want to join in. Here’s what we played last time. Some of these are likely to get called again:-
Route 66, Shadow of your smile, Fly me to the Moon, My Funny Valentine, There will never be another you, Straight no chaser, Autumn Leaves, Blue Moon, Blue Bossa, Honeysuckle Rose, September in the Rain, All of me, Glory of Love.
Not groundbreaking avant garde stuff, but we aim always to perform from memory, but enjoy a fluent performance by minimising the paper on the stand.
The next Jam will be on April 6th at 8 pm.
Check http://www.redlion.biz/ for information about and directions to the pub.
If you’ve got news about the jam planned in Marston, or the reopening of The X, or any other jazz news, please post it here.
